Hour floors and training elements are set by Penal Code § 26165. Your county may require more, and decides which courses it accepts. The online course provides 8 hours of online classroom instruction — the classroom portion only. Live fire is separate and in person.

Start earlier than you think

The coursework is the predictable part.

A California CCW renewal involves your county, and county timelines are not built around your expiration date. Appointment availability, processing backlogs and re-qualification scheduling all sit between you and a renewed license — and none of them speed up because you are running out of time.

An expired license is not a license. There is no grace period you can carry on. If your renewal lapses, you are in the position of someone without a license until the county issues a new one, and depending on how long the lapse runs, some authorities will treat the application as an initial rather than a renewal — which means the longer course, the higher fee and a longer wait.

The practical advice is unglamorous: find your county's renewal window the day you think about this, and work backwards from it.

Renewal is not an online-only process

Under Penal Code § 26165(d), a renewal course must be no less than 8 hours and must satisfy the same training elements as an initial course. That includes § 26165(a)(6) — live-fire shooting exercises on a range, and a demonstration of safe handling and shooting proficiency with each firearm you want listed on your license.

Counties can add requirements on top of that floor, and they decide which courses and instructors they accept. They cannot waive the live-fire component. Confirm course acceptance with your issuing authority before enrolling in anything.
